With the only major supermarket in Kingston town centre being a Sainsbury’s, students are fairly limited to where they can buy their food.
An alternative to lugging your bags around town, is internet grocery shopping.
A Healthier Kingston survey compared the prices of five household items: six medium free range eggs, wholemeal bread, four chicken breasts, six Jazz apples and four pints of semi-skimmed milk. The survey found that Iceland was the cheapest online shop, saving nearly £5.00 compared to Waitrose. Iceland was, on average, a pound cheaper than the four other supermarkets in the survey: Tescos, Sainsbury's, Morrison's and Asda.
The overall prices for the five items were were:
Asda £8.29
Tesco £8.39
Sainsbury's £8.80
Morrisons £8.21
Waitrose £12.20
Iceland £7.38
Although Iceland were the cheapest overall, it was infact, Asda who had the most amount of cheapest items. 60% of items could be find for the lowest price at Asda.
KU student Sophie Baber, 20, had this to say about the findings: "I always do an internet shop. It's much cheaper and I'm able to buy healthier food for lowest prices. I usually shop at Sainsbury's but I'll probably change to Asda now I know it's cheaper."
